Rode south out of Pocatello to Lava Hot Springs then followed old US 30 around through Bancroft. Crossed over to Grace and the rode on to Preston where I caught US 91 taking me to Downey and onto I-15 for the return to Pocatello . About 175 miles in all. The weather was fantastic as the pictures show. Temps in the low 60’s mostly. A very relaxing and enjoyable ride.
The BW pictures were taken with my fuji XP. I usually wear it around my neck when I ride. It is easy to operate one-handed while on the move which the Nikon is not. In additions it is water and dust proof, shock resistant, and a lot cheaper to replace if I drop it.
The color photos are with the Nikon which I am just learning how to use.

The air quality here has been terrible. Smoke from fires in the Salmon River Area, in Central Idaho, and in Montana have made things so smokey that it has been dangerous to breathe for some folks. Visibility has been poor and my throat has been a Bit raw because of it. Ride anyway. That’s my motto.
With friends Denny and Paul I set off Saturday towards the south. Figured there would be less smoke and we were correct. We followed the usual route to do the Logan Canyon ride, riding through Lava Hot Springs, to grace, and then over the mountain to Bear Lake via Emigration Canyon. The fall colors were in full, magnificent display on the Emigration ride.
We traveled along Bear Lake to Garde City Utah where we stopped for Lunch at Merlin’s drive-in and topped off our gas tank. By now the smoke had been left behind.
At Garden City, Denny left us and hurried back to attend a grandson’s birthday. Paul and i rolled on, but rather than turning and heading down Logan Canyon as we usually do, continued on Utah 30 along the lake to Lake Town and then through a winding canyon out of the Bear Lake valley and onto the flats to Sage Junction where we connected with Utah 39. This was a new road for both of us, a ride I had heard about but had never done. We traveled through western ranch country, hay meadows, once even stopping for about 15 minutes while cowboys moved a herd of cattle in front of us (watch the cow-pies as they can be slick). We passed trough some red-rock country and soon were traveling through vast stands of golden, quaking Aspen.
This beautiful 60 mile road eventually winds along the Ogden river and though the canyon , ending up in the city of Ogden. There we stopped for a stretch and then jumped on I-84/15 for the 120 mile ride back to Pocatello. We had an enjoyable 385 mile day.
I love my new bike. It performed well, handles great and was comfortable all day long. Gas mileage was in the mid-high 40s. I Love my new bike.

The POW*MIA Awareness Rally and Motorcycle Rodeo was held here over the weekend. A good time was had by all and I captured some of it digitally to share with you. You can see my full report in the September issue of Northern Rockies Rider.

In my humble opinion, The Charlie Brechtel Band is the baddest biker band ever and last night I had the chance to interview Charlie Brechtel. The piece that came out of that interview will be published in the September issue of Northern Rockies Rider. After that is published, I’ll place the full piece here for the enjoyment of all.
Charlie Brechtel has no guile about him. He is a genuine individual, and a decent guy. SOB

The 12th annual Pocatello POW*MIA Awareness Rally and Motorcycle Rodeo got underway with the raising of the big flag.
Today is the day to register for participation in events like the Tattoo competition, loud pipes and burn-out competition, mud-drags, show and shine, etc. The spectacular opening ceremonies will be held in front of the grandstand tonight at 6:00 pm and this will include a P-51 flyby. The opening ceremonies will be followed by a concert featuring Country Music star Andy Griggs (separate ticket 10$). Except for the Andy Griggs concert, a $15 ticket and wristband will get you into every thing, including the Saturday night concert.
If you’re planning on having the Opening ceremonies come early to get a good seat. SOB

Each year, two weeks after Labor Day weekend, thousands of folks converge near some cliffs outside of the town New Plymouth for Idaho’s largest Motorcycle event, The Big Nasty hill climb. This year the dates for the 10th annual gathering are September 14-16 and organizers are hoping to top last years barn burner event which featured 702 entries, set a single day attendance record on Saturday of over 7000 and sold 468 camping passes.
The vent is on the AMA Pro-tour so a large number of great bikes and riders will be on hand in numerous categories and divisions. If you’re not familiar with hill climbing competitions, here’s a video :
The $20 per vehicle camping pass covers all 3 days. Food and drink available from vendors on site and there is nightly entertainment. If you’re not a camper your best bet for accommodations will be 11 miles away in Ontario, OR. Several motels available there. Bring a lawn chair and probably a sun umbrella or canopy, sit back and enjoy. Seldom any rain in this area at this time of the year.
